BHARATHANATYAM

Baratanatyam which originated in Southern India as a temple dance tradition called DasiAttam (Performed by the Deva Dasis or dedicated Temple Dancers as an offering or Service to the Deity) Bharatanatyam roots back to more than 2000 years and is perhaps the most advanced and evolved dance form of all the Classical Indian dance forms. The dance moved from temples to theaters over time, but has retained its characteristic devotional component, expression of human emotions, and stylized storytelling. The flexibility of the Bharatanatyam framework lends itself well to both traditional themes as well as modern day subjects. Originally performed only by female soloists, Bharatanatyam is now performed by male and female soloists as well as ensembles all over the world.

NATTUVANGAM

THE RHYTHMIC SOUND PLAY OF CYMBALS

The most important member of a Bharatanatyam orchestra is, arguably, the nattuvanar. This is the person who plays the set of cymbals known simply as talam.

The pair of talams consists of two cymbals made of different kinds of metal alloys. The cymbals used in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi are heavier and have a greater responsibility. This can be said because the sounds produced by tapping the cymbals at various angles represent the different sounds of the dancer’s feet when they make contact with the ground.

In Kala Sowmyam students are trained with Nattuvangam along with their regular dance sessions after they finish their senior grade. Since they are more familiar with the compositions from inception, they will be able follow the footwork of the dancer with ease.
